Sofia Zoo is the oldest and the largest zoological garden on the Balkans. It is located a short drive from the capital's center and benefits from excellent public transport connections. Open all year-round, it admits visitors from 09:00 till 16:00 (visiting time is till 17:00).
Sofia Zoo homes a large number of mammals, reptiles, birds, fish and amphibians and is the operational base for various education and conservation programs.
The Educational Center located within the zoo features a well-equipped conference room and an exhibition of different small domestic animals. The Center runs a good number of educational and student training and induction courses, as well as various workshops, promotions, surveys and scientific research. The Noah Zoo Club at the Center gathers children of different ages around their love and passion for the animals and nature. A Summer School is also available during the holidays.
In 1995 (after 'the changes') the Zoo introduced the 'Adopt an Animal' program as an effective alternative way to finance the care for the animals. The Annual 'Adopter's Day' Celebration is one of the most popular events at the Zoo alongside the cheerful live music concerts and themed parties.
